Premiere Performances’ Fall 2021 Recital Series opens with
Award-winning pianist David Greilsammer’s Scarlatti:Cage:Sonatas

Additional performance added on 8 Sep (Wed) 7:30pm at Hong Kong City Hall Concert Hall

“One of the most accomplished and adventurous musicians of his generation” The New York Times
Scarlatti:Cage Sonatas was selected by The New York Times as one of ten most Important Musical Events of the Year.

By popular demand, Premiere Performances of Hong Kong (Premiere Performances) is thrilled to add one more performance to Franco-Israeli pianist David Greilsammer’s acclaimed solo recital programme “Scarlatti:Cage:Sonatas”.

The first performance on 5 Sep 2021 (Sunday) is nearly sold out, so an additional performance has been scheduled for 8 Sep 2021 (Wednesday). Known for his eclectic and fascinating programmes, David Greilsammer is recognised as one of the most audacious and adventurous artists in the classical world.

Rescheduled from June 2020, David Greilsammer at last brings his ground-breaking programme “Scarlatti:Cage Sonatas” to Hong Kong.  In this 70 minute recital, Greilsammer alternates between two pianos: playing the Baroque Scarlatti Sonatas on one piano and the avant-garde John Cage Sonatas on another ‘prepared’ piano, in a unique showcase of Greilsammer’s range and virtuosity.

The piano on which Greilsammer will play the Cage sonatas will be prepared according to John Cage’s detailed instructions. Objects such as nuts, bolts and erasers are inserted between the strings to create a special percussive sound – much like an Indonesian gamelan.

David Greilsammer describes the Scarlatti and Cage sonatas as “Music from another planet…More than two hundred years separate the two composers, but their Sonatas seem to be so much alike: short, provocative, passionate, full of wild colours, and bursting with fresh rhythms.”

David is currently enduring the 14-day hotel quarantine for his performances in Hong Kong. He is invited through a special collaboration between Premiere Performances and the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra. He will also be conducting and performing with the HK Phil on 17 & 18 Sep in “Swire Denim Series: Mozart Meets John Williams”. Enjoy 10% off when purchasing tickets to both concerts in the same transaction at URBTIX.
